04-07-16 Deputy Minister Pelegri in Stageira ahead of Aristotle conference
Deputy Education, Research and Religious Affairs minister Theodosis Pelegrinis, accompanied by ministerial advisor Themis Demetrakopoulos, attended the opening event of the International Conference on Aristotelian Philosophy in the philosopher’s birthplace of Stageira, in the northern Greece province of Chalkidiki.
Organised by the World Congress of Philosophy and the International Association for Greek Philosophy, the conference marks the 2,400th anniversary of the birth of Aristotle and will take place in Athens between 10-15 July, 2016.
UNESCO has proclaimed 2016 as the “Aristotle Anniversary Year”, following a 2013 initiative launched by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Aristotle Studies, and in collaboration with the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO.
During his visit, Pelegrinis, local MP Katerina Igglezi, and Demetrakopoulos held discussions with Aristotelis Municipality Mayor Yorgos Zoumbas on the prospect of utilising Aristotle’s birthplace as a venue for the promotion of Aristotelian studies. They also discussed issues that have arisen regarding gold mining in the region.
