10-08-16 Hundreds of new special education structures announced

Following the establishment of new, expanded special education structures nationwide, and ahead of the publication of the related joint ministerial decisions in the Government Gazette, the Education Ministry is announcing all new facilities and programmes so as to inform educators, students and parents.

The establishment of hundreds of new structures aims to meet in the best manner the educational needs of students all around the country. After eight years of [governmental] inertia and indifference regarding accumulated and burgeoning needs in the area of special education, the ministry recognises the need for new structures for learning support, thus demonstrating its practical support for the upgrading of special education, and of education in general.

The ministry is completely ready to cover the operational requirements for staffing new and older special education structures, so that schools can operate without impediments from the very first days of classes.

Despite the economic crisis and fiscal pressures, the Education Ministry has managed to increase by 20 percent the induction classes, and has increased the number of special education schools by eight percent.

In 2016-2017, there will be an additional 531 induction classes, while 23 new special education schools are being established, and 12 new high school classes at existing special education vocational junior high schools.

All of the above greatly bolsters the existing special education network, allowing students with disabilities and/or special education needs to study and be integrated in the educational environment that is suitable for them, in all regions of the country.
