26-09-16 Conference generates proposals on environmental education, sustainable growth
A conference aimed at generating Proposals for the Prospects of the Institution of Centres of Environmental Education (KPE being the Greek acronym) was held at the Education Ministry on 22-23 September, 2016, with the participation of all 53 of the centres’ supervisors nationwide, as well as Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) Vice President Pavlos Haramis, and university professors specialising in sustainable development: Professor Evangelos Flogaitis (University of Athens), Professor Alexandros Georgopoulos (University of Thessaloniki) Professor Constantinos Korfiatis (University of Cyprus), and Professor Stefanos Paraskevopoulos (University of Thessaly). The event was co-sponsored by the Institute of Youth and Lifelong learning.
All participants had the opportunity to table proposals for the future of the centres of environmental education. Education Minister General Secretary Yannis Pantis announced the establishment of a legal preparatory committee that will create for the first time a uniform legal framework for the Centres of Environmental Education and for education regarding sustainable development more generally.
General Secretary Pantis underlined the contribution of the centres during their 20-year operation and noted that the ministry leadership is dedicate to upgrading the quality of educational by supporting structures such as the environmental education centres, which offer experiential education and can create a reservoir of good practices aiming at education on sustainable development.
