23-11-16 Events for International Day of People with Disability

In 1992, December 3 was established by the United Nations as the International Day of People with Disability. The aim was to promote activities that would highlight the needs and rights of disabled people, while sensitising society to issues regarding respect and acceptance of differences.

In the framework of promoting induction and equal opportunities in education, educators are requested to organise informational activities that sensitise students at Primary and Secondary Schools.

The activities for the International Day of People with Disability will be organised with the initiative of Teachers’ Associations and the support of School Counselors and the active participation of students. The aim is to address questions on issues of human rights and to cultivate empathy among members of the educational community.

An indicative list of books and films on the topic of disabilities, which can trigger discussion and activities with the aim of sensitising and informing members of the school community, regarding the right to equal access to education, to work, to recreation, and more generally to the social life of disabled people, is posted at the Education Ministry website link:

Special Education Schools and KEDDY diagnostic centres are asked to solicit and respond to requests for the support of activities of Primary and Secondary Schools, with their specialised staff.
