 Education Minister Nikos Filis appeared open to the prospect of issuing drivers’ licenses to 17-year-olds, once the appropriate school training is in place, in an interview with Vima FM radio, but he was adamant about giving 17-year-olds the right to vote in general elections.

“We consider it necessary for 17-year-olds to vote to elect the government.  Society must give the youth the privilege and responsibility to decide regarding the course of society,” Filis said.

“Just as one needs a political education to vote at 17, we need training beginning in primary school on the responsibilities of driving, “ Filis said. “In the last years of primary school and the first years of junior high we want to institute lessons that acclimate students to driving, so as to help prevent the great road accident problem in Greece,” he added, noting that such training must be systematic and comprehensive.
