25-07-16 Young Greek mathematicians excel in Hong Kong, Balkans maths Olympiads
Several Greek primary and secondary school students clinched medals and honourable mentions in three different mathematics competitions recently, the International Mathematics Olympiad in Hong Kong and the 20thJunior BalkanMathematical Olympiad(JBMO) inSlatina,Romania.
According to its website, “The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students, and it is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with seven countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries, from five continents.”
The Greek team took home two bronze medals, and three honourable mentions.

The Greek Mathematical Society prepares and supports the efforts of student competitors on a voluntary basis in an effort to upgrade mathematics education in Greece.
The students were accompanied Athens Polytechnic Associate Professor Anargyros Fellouris and mathematician Evangelos Zotos.
The grand sponsor of the Greek team was the Onassis Foundation.

The Greek team picked up one gold medal, one silver medal, and three bronze medals, at the competition, held between June 24-29.

The students were accompanied by mathematicians Silouanos Brazitikos and Vasileios Visadourakis.
In the 33rd Balkan Mathematical Olympiad in Tirana, Albania, held between May 5-10, 2016, with 11 teams from southeastern Europe and nine teams from guest countries – including Italy, France and the UK - competing, the Greek team clinched two silver and four bronze medals.
