01-08-16 Athens University team clinches five medals at IMC math competition
The five-member team of the Athens University faculty of mathematics won one gold medal, two silver medals, and two bronze medals at the 23rd International Mathematics Competition (IMC), which was hosted by the American University in Bulgaria, in Blagoevgrad, between 25-31 July, 2016.
The competition, according to the IMC website, is for students completing their first, second, third or fourth year of university education and consists of 2 Sessions of 5 hours each. Problems are from the fields of Algebra, Analysis (Real and Complex), Geometry and Combinatorics. The working language is English.
The problems are chosen at the Meeting of the Jury from those received in advance by the President of the Jury, Professor John Jayne.
Costas Psaromiligos was awarded a gold medal, Antonis Zitridis a silver medal, and bronze medals went to Phaedon Andriopoulos and Michalis Sarantis.
The mathematics competition for university students is the largest of its kind internationally, and it is organised by University College London.
Students from the Athens University mathematics department have participated in the competition since 2007-8. This year 258 students in 46 teams participated. The Greek team’s expenses were covered mostly by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), in the context of an agreement with the National Bank of Greece.
