01-07-16 Correction regarding teacher retirements and pensions

Regarding inaccurate and irresponsible press reports suggesting that “the pensions of 10,000 educators are in jeopardy”, the ministry clarifies that:

  1. The claim that 10,000 educators filed retirement papers is false. Only 1,350 primary and secondary school teachers filed.
  2. The pensions of primary and secondary school teachers who filed for retirement between April 21 and May 4, 2016, are calculated based on the pension regulations of the public sector, which were in effect before the passing of law 4387/16 (article 33, paragraph 2 of law 4386/16).
  3. Whatever problems may arise from the implementation of article 239 of law 4389/16, which provides for the service time of educators until 31-08-2016, will be handled by the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs in cooperation with the state General Accounting Office in the immediate future.
