02-08-16 Tutoring, language schools hours, teachers’ pay to be regulated
An amendment to a bill tabled by the Education Ministry aims to ensure legal operation of tutoring schools (frontistiria) and foreign language centres in Greece, as they must now provide the ministry information on the teaching programme, the number of teachers and students, and the labour contracts, which today pay teachers an average of 4.6 euros gross per hour.
Teachers will by law receive additional pay for classes on Sundays and holidays, and there will be oversight over their teaching schedule and legal social insurance.
The bill also provides Social Insurance Foundation (IKA) coverage for employees at TheYouth and Lifelong Learning Foundation (INEDIVIM), and at the National Organisation for the Certification of Qualifications & Vocational Guidance (EOPPEP).
Another provision deals with issues and problems identified by EOPPEP at private primary and secondary schools. The schools will be able to report lacks or changes in the building structures, which are related to their operation permits, allowing them to remedy violations legally.
Addressing the issue of work conditions at tutoring schools, Filis told parliament that many of the 50,000 teachers that work at such institutes are bereft of basic labour and insurance rights, which he said must be legally ensured. “The hourly gross hourly wage at tutoring schools is 4.6 euros. Do you believe there can be substantial education in this manner? We seek to ensure that full time teachers are guaranteed 25 work days a month, to make them eligible for social insurance,” Filis told parliament.
